Our room was found to be very clean and airy, larger than the normal hotel room. The hotel does have an elevator, however, we found ourselves using the open stairways to access our floor. Our room was on the third floor of the hotel.

We stayed in the main building, which housed the registration desk, the Cascades restaurant and lounge, a gift shop, a coffee shop, and an area where you could register for tours of the property and hotel. Gus was pretty friendly as he offered some information on the local area. He provided us with maps of the Hotel and grounds as well as an abbreviated map for the City of Estes Park. Upon our arrival, front desk clerk, Gus, quickly and efficiently completed our check in process. Our two night stay at the Stanley Hotel was in celebration of our 45th wedding anniversary (January) and February's Valentines day. During the winter, the town shuts down early. The Stanley Hotel sits at the entrance of the Rocky Mountain National Park at Estes Park, which is a little town great for walking, shopping, eating, and drinking. The newer accommodations include the Lodge (boutique feel) and Aspire (contemporary rooms/suites). There is a historic brass elevator that takes you up to your room or you can take the wide staircase. The main hotel is much cheaper and has an on-site restaurant, bar, event rooms, spa and gift shop. The main Stanley Hotel is the historic part, which has thin walls and you can hear people walking and talking in the hallway. The hotel offers day and night guided ghost tours, as well as scheduled live concerts. The hotel receptionist indicated that Room 217 is booked year round. Other movies filmed at the Stanley Hotel include Dumb and Dumber. The Shining (Mini-series) was filmed at the Stanley Hotel. The novel was made into a movie by Stanley Kubrick, but the movie was not filmed at the Stanley Hotel. Room 217 is where he stayed to write the horror psychological thriller The Shining (Novel). The Stanley Hotel is a historic hotel made famous by Stephen King.
